The Defence Ministry has ordered a probe into allegations of irregularities in the purchase of meat for troops in the forward area of Ladakh and Siachen.
The issue relates to contracted supply of meat, running into crores of rupees in the Army's Northern Command two years ago, and comes close on the heels of two other purchase scams - of liquor and petroleum products.
An Army Court of Inquiry is probing the issue after irregularities in meat contracts were brought to the notice of the Army Headquarters through "departmental channels," said an official spokesman IN New Delhi on Thursday.
The spokesman said the matter was being looked into at an appropriate level.
"It will be premature to pinpoint any individual or appointment till the veracity of irregularities is authenticated," he added.
Without naming the officers concerned, the spokesman said, "Appropriate action will be taken against the guilty person whatever his level."
"If found blameworthy, no acts of commission or omission would be suppressed or overlooked. We will not allow the culprit to go scot free," he added.
