Ten miners were killed and two seriously injured when the roof of a coal mine collapsed in Godavarikhani area in Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Friday.

Singareni Collieries Company Limited Executive Director T R K Rao told rediff.com the accident occurred around 0115 hours IST when a dozen workers were working in the shift in the GDK 8 A incline (underground) mine in Godavarikhani, about 170 km northeast of Hyderabad.

"The cause of the roof collapse is being ascertained. Two persons were taken out alive and shifted to the collieries hospital for treatment. Two bodies were also recovered," TRK Rao said.

This is the second major accident in Singareni Collieries in the last four months. Earlier, on June 16, as many as 17 miners met a watery grave in GDK 7 Life Extension project mine in Godavarikhani area when the mine was suddenly flooded.
