Six Bharatiya Janata Party activists were arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir police in Srinagar on Saturday, four days ahead of the proposed flag hoisting by the party in city centre Lal Chowk.
The police said 'activists of a particular party were arrested here Saturday as they tried to violate the prohibitory orders already in place in the capital city'.
The statement also said some posters were also recovered from the possession of the arrested persons.
Sources in Srinagar said the BJP activists intended to paste the posters in the city centre Lal Chowk ahead of the flag hoisting ceremony.
The state government has already announced that it will not allow the flag hoisting in the Lal Chowk neither would it allow the separatist pro-independence Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front march.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high level meeting in the winter capital Jammu early this week to review the situation.
The meeting decided "that no programme which has the potential of vitiating the peaceful atmosphere in the state will be allowed," according to an official statement.
"The state government has directed the civil and police authorities to ensure that all measures are taken to ensure that the law and order in the state is not disturbed in the run up to the Republic Day celebration," the statement said.
