After Amma canteens, Jayalalithaa announces Amma mobile phones

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday announced in the state assembly, a scheme called ‘Amma Mobile Phone’ for women self-help groups.

Jayalalithaa said that in the first phase, 20,000 mobile phones at an outlay of Rs 15 crore would be distributed.

She said that the women’s self-help group trainers have to keep records of membership subscription, savings, loans and recoveries. “A special mobile application will be designed to ensure registration of details and to monitor the functioning of each group,” she added.

The state has 6.08 lakh self-help groups with a membership of 92 lakh women. The federations are also formed at the village level and each one comprises of 25 groups.

The mobile phone scheme is one among many of the Amma brand schemes implemented in the state. Some of them are Amma cement, Amma mineral water, Amma canteen and others.
