Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday supported senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader LK Advani, who has expressed his fear of return of Emergency in the country.

Advani had said that "forces that can crush democracy have become stronger".

"Advani is a veteran leader and there is a need to give attention to his fear and worry,” Nitish Kumar said.

Without directly naming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar targeted him by saying that the central government was protecting law breakers. "It is unfortunate, but true," said Nitish Kumar.

“Till last week, BJP leaders repeatedly claimed that their one-year-old government is corruption was scam free. But now they have to explain to the people why they have extended helped to their favourites. Is this not corruption?” Kumar asked.

Nitish Kumar said that it has exposed the central government's favouritism for a few powerful people. "Silence of the PM over the Sushma Swaraj-Lalit Modi-Vashundhra Raje episode suggests he supports them," he said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal too agreed with BJP patriarch L K Advani that imposition of Emergency cannot be ruled in the country and wondered whether Delhi will be the "first experiment" towards it.

"Advani ji is correct in saying that Emergency can't be ruled out. Is Delhi their first experiment?," Kejriwal tweeted.

"Advani's interview is first indictment of Modi's politics. He is saying democracy is not safe, Emergency is not far, under Modi's leadership," Ashutosh tweeted.

In an interview to Indian Express ahead of the 40th anniversary of the Emergency, Advani said "forces that can crush democracy are stronger" and that he will not say that it cannot happen again.
