975 people have been arrested in connection with the violence in Muzaffarnagar, in which 40 people lost their lives, police said on Tuesday.

"975 people have been arrested and 7,000 have been bound down in different districts," IG (Crime) Ashish Gupta told mediapersons in Lucknow.

About 1,720 arms licences have been cancelled, the IG said, adding that the National Security Act has been slapped on three people arrested from Bagpat, two in Saharanpur and process to invoke NSA on four others in Saharanpur was on.

Gupta said no incident of communal violence was reported from Muzaffarnagar and other areas on Tuesday, barring one in Rampur police station area of Saharanpur where one fruit vendor was fired at and injured by two persons.

The IG said in the cross FIRs filed in connection with the August 27 murder of three youths belonging to different communities over eve-teasing, the names of seven of the 12 named have been found to be incorrect and their names have been removed.

He said the situation was improving but deployment of security forces would continue as a precautionary measure.
