Name: Rajesh Reddy
Email: rajesh.mosali@tch.harvard.edu
Nomination: Tehelka Team
Reason: Someone had the guts to expose the corruption in India's Defence circles. We know how rampant Corruption is in India. But in Defence... is flabbergasting. I guess, instead of getting defensive about it, the government should take constructive steps to root out corruption from Defence and other areas of the society. That might be too much to ask, but Tehelka's investigation was a step in the right direction.

Nomination: george fernandes
Reason: what can a man do more than take bribes in the name of protecting our country, resign and then make a dubious comeback, loot country in the name of coffins for martyrs and still make noise over terrorism while doing nothing concrete. if this was a bad year for india half the credit for it goes to socialist [jaya]orge(jaitly) fernandes.

Wed Dec 26 21:13:06 2001
Name: S Antony Raj
Email: srajantony@rediffmail.com
Nomination: J Jayalalitha
Reason: J Jayalalitha was stamped as a corrupt politician. She became popular when she allegedly spent Rs 100 crore on her foster son's wedding. The lady, who was overthrown from power five years ago, has come back strongly this year. She also ordered the arrest of two Union ministers and former chief minister K Karunanidhi. She was the first chief minister to be disqualified by the Supreme Court. However, she was recently acquitted in two corruption cases. So my vote goes to the 'lady-Hitler' J Jayalalitha.

Wed Dec 26 21:18:31 2001
Name: Parag Gupta
Email: parag.gupta@unilever.com
Nomination: Pulella Gopichand
Reason: Gopichand won in a sport where people wake up only when the victory comes through and are not rooting for the player; not following each and every progress made. Imagine the psychological boost he/other players (Do we all remember Malleswari?) would have got, if an equivalent of Mr Dalmiya stood up ALL THE WAY for the players. We need to correct our myopic attitude; sports is the most wonderful ambassador a country can have. We need to respect this fact.

Wed Dec 26 21:27:00 2001
Name: Tushar Thakkar
Email: t2shar@rediffmail.com
Nomination: The Common Man
Reason: For, even in these troubled times, his love for his country is unmoved, he still continues to cheer the Indian cricket team, he still continues to enjoy and appreciate the good movies, he still lives life on gamely hoping and building for the future.

Wed Dec 26 21:27:05 2001
Name: Srinivas Reddy M
Email: mulagondla@rediffmail.com
Nomination: Tarun Tejpal (Tehelka.com)
Reason: Tehelka's videotaped exposé of corruption by the politicians and defence officials using hidden video cameras is for the first time in indian history, and one can easily guess how much risk they might have taken. And the incident has created tremors in indian politics. So my choice for the man of the year (Indian) for 2001 is Mr Tarun Tejpal.

Wed Dec 26 21:27:46 2001
Name: Ratnakar
Email: ratna_69@hotmail.com
Nomination: A P J Abdul Kalam
Reason: The media goes gaga over 3rd rate actors, over hyped cricketers and the shenanigans of the politicians. But they don't look for the real heroes who are all around us. My Indian of the Year is A P J Abdul Kalam. His contribution to India's nuclear policy is well known. What is less known is the fact that he went about preaching the greatness of India, spreading scientific temper among kids. At a time when India bashing seems to be Indian media's favourite hobby, here is one person whom India needs.

Wed Dec 26 21:27:52 2001
Name: m kongovi
Email: kongovis@yahoo.com
Nomination: Mr Narayan Murthy, CEO Infosys
Reason: India has had very few visionaries since its independence from the British rule. People like Mr Murthy lead and inspire the younger generation and shape the country's future (we've seen JRD at work in the past). They need to be recognized! And that's the least we can do.

Wed Dec 26 21:28:53 2001

Wed Dec 26 21:29:35 2001
Name: manish kumar
Email: mksports@yahoo.com
Nomination: Common man
Reason: I know it sounds cliched but the way things have been, specially this year, I would give my vote to the common man for overcoming all odds. You know, beginning with economic depression, law and order problems, corruption and the social tension, be it thru terrorism (we are the most affected lot) or war... I am trying not to be cynical but take a deep breath and probably most people will agree that they are relieved to have made it to the next year.

Nomination: The Ordinary Indian on the Road
Reason: No one in the Indian scene deserves to be called as the Indian of the year because there is none who has given some worthwhile contribution anywhere in any area of society. I would like to nominate "The Ordinary Indian on the Road" who struggles to earn a living for himself and his family, for whom this is a never ending struggle for life, the "Indian" who everybody takes for granted except for that one day in 5 years when he goes to vote. I dedicate this nomination to the Millions of Indians out there who suffer, due not to their own follies but the crimes committed by those in power.

Wed Dec 26 21:42:58 2001
Name: Raj
Email: raj_av@rediffmail.com
Nomination: The Common Man
Reason: We survived a disaster of an earthquake. Digested a scam ridden regime. Did not bat an eyelid when the government shamelessly defended every wrongdoing. We were unashamed in praising Musharraf on his visit here. We remorselessly lost in cricket and still continued to pack the stands even while leaving the hockey stands empty (never mind if they are on the upswing). We showed the world we are resilient by pragmatically eschewing attack even when our Parliament was attacked. We happily forgave a Finance Minister who is at best clueless about the economy. Yes, the common man is my Rediff Indian of the Year. He trudges on, nevertheless.
