Negative Reason ... There are very few options ... in Business - Narayana Murthy, In Politics ... NO ONE AT ALL , In society - cant think of exceptional people, in sports - maybe Karnam Malleswari . However rewarding her will be a sad commentary on Indian sport as a whole (no discredit to her here). So we are really left with entertainers - atleast some of them did their jobs !

Reason: This particular Indian, enthralled the whole nation for nearly 108 days (four months), when the policiticians or the cricketers could not make any difference with their promises or skills.
The main reason being that Veerapan was atleast bothered to secure the release of those people who were arrested because of his involvement.
