Tripura IGP escapes attempt on lifeTripura Inspector General of Police Pranay Sahay and other senior police officers escaped unhurt when militants ambushed their convoy at Sindhukumar Pomra in Dhalai district last night. The police said that Sahay, along with Dhalai district Superintendent of Police B K Roy, was returning to Agartala after a meeting at Manu police station when the ambush occurred. Strong return fire from security forced the militants to give up the attack. Security forces immediately launched a search operation, and quickly apprehended a rebel, They have seized a gun from him. Combing operations are still on. Meanwhile, security forces are yet to trace Nagadi Reang, a senior tribal leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist and an elected member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. He was abducted by the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura guerrillas on Wednesday night. Reang was the fourth tribal leader and elected representative to be kidnapped by militants. Sitting tribal MLAs Debabrata Koloi and Purna Mohan Tripura were kidnapped by NLFT guerrillas on July 31 and October 15 respectively from the same district. They are still in captivity. Koloi is the general secretary of the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura, a party with a tribal base, and Tripura, a CPI-M MLA from Chawmanu constituency. The banned All-Tripura Tiger Force militants had kidnapped Pranab Debbarma, another CPI-M tribal MLA last year. Debbarma was released in December after eleven months in captivity. |
