Tata executives interrogated

Three Tata executives, including its executive director S M Kidwai, were interrogated in Guwahati by the Assam police's special investigation team in connection with their alleged nexus with the United Liberation Front of Asom.

The other two executives were S Ganapathy from Tata's Madras office and Dipankar Bora. Both were part of the Tata Tea delegation that negotiated with ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah in Bangkok.

The managers arrived from Calcutta on Friday afternoon and were driven to the special branch's headquarters.

Sources say Kidwai is likely to be arrested as he has no legal protection. The Guwahati high court had rejected his anticipatory bail last week. The interrogation is still continuing.

Earlier, S K Bhasin, managing director, Goodricke group of tea companies, was quizzed by the state police's Criminal Investigation Department. His company has been accused of paying money regularly to the National Democratic Front of Bodoland.

The CID had also interrogated two other senior executives, including Tata Tea director (finance) D K Mehra, in connection with payments made to the NDFB in 1991 to secure the release of its kidnapped manager Kuldeep Singh. The company had reportedly paid Rs 200,000 as ransom.
