Afghanistan's interim leader Hamid Karzai appears to have won the presidential election.

According to a report on the BBC, Karzai got 55.3% of the votes and is much ahead of his nearest rival Yunus Qanuni after 94.4% of the votes polled in the October 9 election were counted.

The counting is not yet complete and an official announcement is still a few days away.
