Date sent: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 00:37:20 -0700 I am touched by the angel-like service of Sister Shanti. People like her are gods in human form blessing the world with Christ-like compassion. God bless Sister Shanti and her little ones in whom she serves her god. I thank you for bringing such heart touching articles to people. It certainly shows that there is 'Hope' for mankind.
Date sent: Tue, 09 Dec 1997 13:43:10 -0500 It is high time that V P Singh retired from politics. He has been making a fool of himself for too long. He is a man who was with the Congress, then forged an alliance with the BJP against the Congress. When the going got hot, he disrobed himself a la Gandhi and became a messiah of the downtrodden. The messenger of equity and inequity then tried to put together a motley group of discredited Communists and regional buffoons called the 'United Front' which was actually a divided front with a Leftist manifesto and a finance minister who was leaning to the Right. He now belatedly dons the role of a 'peacemaker' when everybody knows that all that is left of the UF are fragments and 'pieces' and that he can at best be a 'piece-maker'. Date sent: Thu, 23 Oct 1997 07:32:53 PDT I am writing with reference to your news article on the Cabinet's approval of the purchase of Russian subs and frigates. What bothers me about this article is the person who wrote it has not bothered to check facts about the weapons systems described. For example in the initial phase of the article the purchase of frigates is described. Then in para 6, according to "Russian media" India was expected to buy...... and four Illyushin IL-78 frigates. IL-78 are airborne refuelling aircraft which is mentioned in para 7 and 8. Does the person who wrote this article even know the difference between a frigate and and aircraft? Apparently not. If it was a mistake, it is inexcusable. This is the specific concern I had. On a more broader scope why are Indian journalists not very well informed about defense matters and in particular about weapons systems? Again in the same article, according to "Russian media" India was showing keen interest in top of the line S-300 PMU-1 and Tunguska anti-missile air defense systems. India had already shown keen interest in the Tunguska system. India was the first country to order the Tunguska anti-aircraft defense missile system. Is the author aware of this? Ashwin Patel Mr Patel is correct. The error is regretted.

'Ask the Chief Minister' seems to be an innovative and refreshing departure from the mundane television programmes, giving the common man a direct line to the chief minister's office. God help our country if such politicians run amok all the while. If Dawaram is willing to go, why don't they let him. Don't the lives of the hundreds killed mean anything to them? Prasanna V
Date sent: Tue, 09 Dec 1997 09:16:42 -0800 I read the whole incident to get to know about this Veerappan leela. I was shocked to learn that MLAs and politicians are supporting Veerappan so openly (not clandestinely) and that able police officers are held back by stupid governments. I am happy to learn that there is at least one police officer who has the guts to nab him. Prasad
Date sent: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 17:18:15 -0800 I truly sympathise with Shihan and wish him the very best. I sincerely hope that among this swarm of people against him and his marriage, he can find friends and support of people for what he is as an individual and not because he belongs to 'X' or 'Y' religion. I can only hope and pray that the people of India one day rise above these trivial distinctions and be able to assert themselves as one nation and one people. If only they had a view to how the world sees India as a nation and Indians as a race of people, they would realise that they have to prove a lot, not because they have to but because they should as a matter of pride. As for Shihan, you will have to find peace and love in the relationship with your wife. It's hard to live alone and fall apart but it's harder to live alone and stay together. Amongst this opposition you will always have noticed support of people like myself. But the source of your strength is not our support or the opposition you face. It's your love for your wife and the pursuit of values both of you have cherished. Good luck my friend. Ashish Tripathi Bellevue, WA 98005
Date sent: Thu, 06 Nov 1997 12:19:31 -0500 I think every thing is okay in this column but the explicit language used by the columnist to comment on Maharaja Hari Singh is really bad. I think you should try to avoid these words
Date sent: Wed, 26 Nov 1997 12:47:30 -0500 I fully support the move to restore local languages. Why only Kannada, every other major language including the national language, Hindi. But there are ways to protest and get the momentum. What Professor Patil is doing is an insult to him being a professor and must be condemned by all educated people. I guess India, being a democratic country, no one has the right to force such actions. Pass this on to the so-called professor. I am ashamed of him being an Indian!
Date sent: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 18:41:50 -0800 It is extremely disgraceful that the people, who are supposed to protect the law and order, are having nexus with criminals. They should be punished with NO mercy. Sripathi
Date sent: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 18:04:24 -0500 Doesn't it make sense to prosecute these tainted cops? What is the deal here? Every time tainted officials are transferred. These officials, of course, are dirty and whatever you do, they will be back to their old tricks again. What is so hard and not justified about prosecuting them? Prosecute them under the Indian Penal Code, that is the solution.

Date sent: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 13:51:47 -0700 Kamala Das seems to have a big problem. She is always jealous either of working women or of Arundhati Roy. Is she against women or something? Just because she didn't get the Booker Prize or doesn't work, she can't just vilify anyone.
