At a time when one is worried about India it is a morale booster to hear that our engineers are doing their job. We must encourage such examples of honest contribution to India's economy. It is nice that you have highlighted such efforts.

Subject: BJP and its 5% reservation

It is saddening to note that the BJP had to be termed anti-minority. Their focus on the uniform civil code, minority non-appeasement etc... etc... were unfortunately portrayed as anti-minority by the Congress goons, and the current UF constituents.

Under such circumstances a stance like this would have been made necessary. However, if the BJP dilutes the goal of Hindu Rashtra with the Uniform Civil Code and more importantly non-appeasement of minorities, then it does not make any difference from the stinking Congress.

While it is extremely necessary to constitute a Hindu Rashtra, the BJP should also tell the world that a Hindu Rashtra need not mean making others second class. Any other country, particularly Islamic countries, treat others, particularly Hindus, as second or even third class citizens.

I am sure the BJP will not dilute its main purpose. At least I am more confident that the VHP and RSS will not allow them to do so. So, let's not ridicule the BJP's current stance and wish them the best! I strongly believe the BJP will win at least 300 seats this election if not more!

India will win!

Like the report, I agree with Varsha that there may be weaknesses in the BJP, but I will still support it for a change and for the hope of an uncorrupt government.

How clueless does one have to be to commit an act of this kind? Great report! Another reminder than one can expect acts of stupidity from even the relatively educated and respected Indian public figures. From the government? Yes of course! Most specially!

Subject: Biharis should be careful of Laloo

The last election is evidence of Laloo's power. So Biharis! Be careful. BJP! Be careful. The BJP may lose many of its leaders because Laloo is out on bail. The wolf is on the move.

Subject: Nayanar and the phone-in show

It is heartening to hear of politicians that are accessible. Despite his shortcomings, particularly in the way he takes care of his detractors, E K Nayanar has few peers of his calibre in Indian politics. Being as he is an earthy leader, with a gift for the repartee, I can see the reason for the success of the show.

Middlemen and political henchmen have constantly denied direct contact with the leaders and have profited from it. With the added exposure that the electronic media can offer, more so now with the Prasar Bharati bill, it will be nice to see more of this.

Subject: Dawaram interview

Later, when Arjunan was caught, we asked him about the surrender move. He told us, ''There was no such move. He wanted to catch either you or Sanjay Arora. That was the plan.''

Maybe Rediff can ask Devaram next... How did he catch Arjunan? Arjunan was never caught. He himself came for treatment.

Subject: Veerappan

I like the interview done by Rediff. The questions asked were apt. From the interview, I can also understand that Mr Gopal is not 100% honest. He is acting on behalf of Verappan. We shouldn't forget that he killed 100s of people and he deserves nothing but capital punishment. It's the nexus between politicians, police and people like him that Veerappan is still alive and making a mockery of our system which is completely messed up.

Why can't a trained group of the armed force catch him? Why can't we put army commandos to nab him? Penny wise and pound foolish!! It has become a trend: you kill people, surrender with the help of politicians and become a MP some day.

Is the intellectual class of India ever going to wake up and get rid of these corrupt people? My grandfather has told me several times that our situation was much better under the British. At least we weren't getting destroyed by our own people. We didn't have so much corruption. It's so frustrating. In the US, a person is a millionaire before he becomes a senator. In India, he is a MP first and then becomes a millionaire, and the sad part is that he doesn't stop there...!! God help India.

Subject: Ali Sardar Jafri and Nandy

Classic effort of Nandy shoving his own opinion in Ali Sardar Jafri's mouth. This is a classic example how our journalists ask questions to help them blame the Sena and Hindus. I am delighted that Mr Jafri understood this very well and politely refused to blame the Sena on this issue.

The fact is undeniable that Sena has respect for all good Muslims like A P J Kalam, Azharuddin, Kirmani and hundreds others, but the media has never reported this appreciation. I request Mr Nandy to interview Bal Thackeray some time on his opinion and appreciation of these people and let people know that the Sena is not obsessed with Muslim bashing.

But what we lack is the courage to show people in good light. Sena bashing can attract light on any journalist in today's times.

Subject: Pritish Nandy's article

This article clearly shows Pritish Nandy's bias towards the UF government. I think Pritish Nandy is not aware that the BJP has a big support base among the Indian middle class and educated Indians. Most of my friends who are studying in the USA/Canada, are supporters of BJP.

In fact, most of us are eagerly waiting for the BJP to come to power. If the BJP does not have support among the masses then why all parties, except the BJP, are afraid of election. My own observation is that PM Gujral is a powerhungry politician. It will be clear in the next few days. He will not hesitate to dump the DMK for power.

Subject: Arundathi Roy: A Thorn in Racists and Sexists

Let us not fool ours fellow Malayalees. We are a people who have feasted on the erotic Manipravalam, and read the descriptive rape cases published in our local dailies, not to speak of the 'things' we have seen on our cinema screens.

What irates us more is not the love-making, but that a Paravan (an 'untouchable' race) figures in it. Again, what we just can't take is that a woman dares to 'speak' in public. There is only one despicable scene and that is outside the book -- in the self-righteous union of racism and sexism.

Dr Radhanath Rath is a famous personality since our student days. I met him at one of our school functions at Jeypore (Orissa). Myself and most of our friends were very impressed with his patriotic fervour and objective thinking. It was nearly 55 years ago. I have lost contact with Samaj since a long time.

Subject: The unmaking of a terrorist

Santosh Sivan is taking an important step forward, in attempting to understand and portray the mind of a suicide bomber, particularly a woman.

By labeling someone as a 'terrorist' it is easy to forget their humanity, their struggles, that these people make choices just as others do, based on a combination of knowledge, values, beliefs, and emotions.

Santosh Sivan should be lauded for his attempt, regardless of the final product, for his vision. His sincerity is apparent in this recognition of the woman "terrorist's" inner struggle, and seeing it as a journey to self-discovery.
