Army moves in as Jaipur curfew continuesTwo columns of the army moved into Jaipur this afternoon as the indefinite curfew imposed in the Shastrinagar and the Bhatta Basti police station areas last evening continued for the second day today. This was disclosed by Rajasthan Chief Secretary M L Mehta. Indefinite curfew was imposed in the two areas following violence and subsequent police firing, which left six people dead and around 100, including the district collector and the city police superintendent, injured. Besides, prohibitory orders, under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code, have been promulgated in the Ramganj and Jalupura police station areas and parts of the Kotwali police station area. The trouble began over alleged encroachment of land belonging to a graveyard in the Shastrinagar area. The alleged encroachers attacked the visiting Waqf Board and district administration party, triggering group clashes among the people of the same community. Meanwhile, the police, following an assurance given by Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, demolished three stalls erected illegally by the encroachers on the graveyard. Stray incidents of stone-throwing and minor clashes were reported from the curfew-bound areas as tension prevailed in some other localities of the capital town, particularly in the SMS hospital premises. A large number of people protested outside the hospital mortuary and refused to take the bodies of the victims till their demands were met. They were demanding the suspension of the district collector and the city police superintendent and a compensation of Rs 1 million to the next of the kin of each of the deceased. Several shops in the areas, dominated by a particular community in the city, also remained closed. UNI |
