Gujarat minister resigns, Atmaram gets showcause notice

Gujarat Minister of State for Environment Upendrasinh Gohil has resigned from the 45-day-old Dilip Parikh ministry. He is protesting against Parikh's failure to fulfil the demands of Independent legislators supporting the minority government.

However, Parikh says the minister will withdraw his resignation.

Gohil submitted his resignation to the chief minister last evening. In a one-line letter to the chief minister, Gohil said he would not like to continue in the ministry at the cost of self-respect.

Five Independent legislators have been inducted into the Parikh ministry with independent portfolios. But they have been made ministers of state. This had irked other Independent legislators.

Meanwhile, a showcause notice was served on Revenue Minister Atmaram Patel by the Rashtriya Janata Party asking him to explain his utterances against the ministry.

Patel had opposed the non-inclusion of his supporters in the ministry. These supporters were ministers in the Shankarsinh Vaghela ministry.

The chief minister declined to comment on the show cause notice, saying it is a party matter and the government has nothing to do with it.
