Iran on Friday warned that any new US threats would draw a "devastating" response, after Washington vowed to impose its toughest-ever financial penalties in an effort to pressure Iran's leadership.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday that details of the measures would be announced on Monday, following President Donald Trump's warning of economic consequences for any country providing Iran with "any type of lifeline."

Iran's Armed Forces chief of staff, Major General Ali Abdollahi, said Tehran was prepared to respond across land, sea, air, air defence and cyberspace.

"Iran's armed forces will respond to the enemy's new threats with crushing, punishing and devastating responses," Iranian media quoted Abdollahi as saying.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Iran's chief negotiator in mediated talks with Washington, said the United States appeared to have concluded that it could not prevail in a direct military confrontation with Iran. -- Agencies
