Some students from various educational institutions gathered at Dhaka Central Shaheed Minar before and after 10 am to participate in the 'March to Dhaka' programme, prompting the police to fire tear gas shells to disperse them.

All students and parents were requested to return home safely. Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman is expected to address the nation after consulting all political parties. The Army issued a statement asking people to remain patient until the Army chief addresses them.

The clashes broke out Sunday morning when protesters attending the non-cooperation programme under the banner of the Students Against Discrimination with the one-point demand of Hasina's resignation over a job quota system faced opposition from the supporters of the ruling Awami League, Chhatra League, and Jubo League activists.

At least 101 people, including 14 policemen, were killed in clashes on Sunday, leading Bengali-language newspaper Prothom Alo reported.

13:58   I took J-K people into confidence: PM on Art 370
"There was complete clarity in my mind that taking the public in Jammu and Kashmir into confidence was absolutely essential for the execution of the decision," Prime Minister Narendra Modi says about his government's decision to abrogate Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

The prime minister's remarks come in the foreword of a new book titled "370: Undoing the Unjust, A New Future for J&K".

"We wanted the decision, whenever it would be taken, to happen with concurrence of the people rather than imposition," he writes in the book, researched and written by non-profit organisation BlueKraft Digital Foundation and published under the Penguin Enterprise imprint.

The book mentions in detail how Modi managed to achieve the goal that he set out for himself. The publishers said the book, which is scheduled to release this month, "chronicles, what is inarguably the greatest constitutional feat in India's history and tells the inside story of how Prime Minister Modi managed the seemingly impossible".

It "delves into multiple blunders at the time of independence that culminated into the unjust regimen of Article 370. It discusses the social, political and economic ramifications of Article 370 since its inception in 1949", a statement by Penguin said on Monday, which marks five years of revocation of Article 370.

"It sheds light on the historical reluctance to challenge this provision and the eventual paradigm shift brought about by its abrogation in 2019. Through careful examination, it discusses how the government resolved legal complexities and safeguarded against security threats to successfully execute the historic decision," the statement said.

Replete with anecdotes, the book recounts the events leading to the abrogation and also chronicles the region's history -- from the ancient to contemporary times. The publishers claimed this is the "first book of its kind on the Modi government where the actual decision-making process has been documented through interactions with top decision makers including Prime Minister Narendra Modi".

13:02   Wayanad landslide superhero without cape missing
Local lad Prajeesh drove his jeep up through the treacherous hill path twice and returned with many hapless people who were stranded atop after the deadly landslides hit Wayanad's high-range Mundakkai last week.

Just before he could move to safety came a phone call for a third 'mission,' but the ever popular local boy is now missing, his damaged jeep seen at Chooralmala, leading to both fears of the worst and hopes for good news.

Risking his own life, the young man drove the vehicle up the hill for a third time but lost himself midway in the gushing flood water and mud and the barrage of huge boulders that rolled down the mountains.

That was the heartbreaking story of Prajeesh, who had plunged into a rescue mission and saved the precious lives of many people after the news about the devastating landslides broke out in the hamlets here in the wee hours of July 30.

With heavy heart and teary eyes, the people of Chooralmala village now call him their "super hero." Hailing from landslide-hit Chooralmala, Prajeesh was already popular among the villagers for his ever-ready-to-help anyone attitude, local people said.

A villager said that after hearing about the first series of landslides that hit Mundakkai hamlet, Prajeesh drove up the hill twice at his own risk and came back with many individuals who were stranded there.

"After that, he was about to shift to a safer place with his family members. Suddenly, he got another phone call, following which he again drove up the hill...but this time, he did not return," he said.

Prajeesh's damaged jeep was later found down in Chooralmala town, the man said, adding no one has seen him since then. Another villager said Prajeesh had been an inevitable presence in all the activities in the village and a favourite of everyone.

"Whether it is a marriage or funeral, he will be there from beginning to end. Like many other people, he personally helped me also a lot, especially during the marriage of my daughter," he said.

Prajeesh's friends said they warned him not to go to the hill when he began his journey for the third time. But he didn't heed them, saying there were more people trapped in Mundakai and that he wanted to save them. "Prajeesh was the super hero of our land...But we have lost him now," an emotional villager said. PTI

The Supreme Court on Monday took suo motu cognisance of the deaths of three civil services aspirants in the basement of a coaching centre here and sought responses from the Centre and the Delhi government.

Coaching centres are playing with the lives of aspirants who come from different parts of the country," the bench said.

On Friday, the Delhi High Court transferred the probe into the deaths of the three students at Rau's IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar from the city police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) "to ensure the public has no doubt over the investigation".

11:44   The five biggest declines on the bourses
The Sensex, India's benchmark stock index, opened with a sharp decline on Monday. The index has seen significant declines on several occasions, often in response to global and domestic economic events.

The five biggest intraday falls in the history of the Sensex include the day of election results on June 4 2024 and the other 4 falls occurred during the pandemic.

On June 4, 2024, the most recent and one of the steepest falls occurred when the Sensex plunged to an intraday low of 70,234.43 points. The market opened at 76,285.78 and saw a dramatic drop of 6,051.35 points or a 7.93 per cent decline, before closing at 72,079.05. This sharp decline was driven by the uncertainty created after the election outcome when none of the Indian political parties got the majority in the parliamentary elections.

On March 23, 2020, the Sensex plummeted to an intraday low of 25,880.83 points, reflecting the panic caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The market opened at 27,608.80, experienced a significant drop of 1,727.97 points or 6.23 per cent to intraday low, and closed slightly higher at 25,981.24. This period marked one of the most volatile times in recent market history.

Just a week before it, on March 16, 2020, the Sensex experienced another major drop, falling to an intraday low of 31,276.30 points. The index opened at 33,103.24 and witnessed a decline of 1,826.94 points or 5.51 per cent as the day low, closing at 31,390.07. The ongoing uncertainty due to the pandemic and its economic impact caused severe market reactions.

On March 13, 2020, the Sensex faced a significant intraday fall, reaching a low of 29,388.97 points. The market had opened at 31,214.13 and plunged by 1,825.16 points or a decline of 5.84 per cent, but managed to recover somewhat by the close, ending the day at 34,103.48. The day's volatility was marked by global market sell-offs and fears of a global recession.

A day prior, on March 12, 2020, the Sensex dropped to an intraday low of 32,493.10 points. The index opened at 34,472.50 and saw a fall of 1,979.40 points or 5.74 per cent before closing at 32,778.14. This decline was part of a series of losses as investors reacted to the rapid spread of COVID-19 and its economic repercussions.

11:17   Investors poorer by Rs 9.51 lakh cr as mkts crash
Investors' wealth eroded by Rs 9.51 lakh crore on Monday morning, following a crash in equity markets where the benchmark Sensex tanked over 2,400 points, mirroring a sharp plunge in global peers.

The 30-share BSE benchmark tanked 2,401.49 points to 78,580.46 in early trade. Following the sharp decline in equities, the market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms dropped by Rs 9,51,771.37 crore to Rs 4,47,65,174.76 crore (USD 5.35 trillion) during the morning trade.

"The global market is reeling as bears enter with a cocktail of bad news. The fear of a reverse Yen carry trade, following an interest rate hike in Japan, was the initial catalyst. This was compounded by fears of a recession in the USA after extremely poor jobs data, which spooked market sentiment," said Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd.

Indian equity markets are witnessing signs of the first meaningful correction in global markets after an extended bull run, he added.

10:35   UK hit by worst riots in years; hotels used to house asylum seekers attacked
As the UK struggles with the greatest social unrest it has seen in years, rioters on Sunday set fire to and broke into hotels designed to house asylum seekers in northern England.

The stabbing deaths of three young girls in Southport, northwest England, earlier this week catalyzed the violence, according to CNN.

To incite anti-Muslim and anti-immigration demonstrations, the far right has exploited and disseminated a surge of misinformation, including unfounded allegations that the assailant was an immigrant.

The suspect was born in Britain, according to police. CNN geolocated footage shows demonstrators attacking and burning two Holiday Inns in northern England on Sunday: one in Rotherham and one in Tamworth, which had previously been criticised by a local lawmaker for hosting asylum seekers.

Local officials said that demonstrators in Tamworth injured one police officer by throwing projectiles, smashing windows, and starting fires.

Meanwhile, police in Rotherham reported that demonstrators broke windows, flung wooden planks, attacked policemen with fire extinguishers and set fire to other objects in an attempt to enter the premises. Assistant Chief Constable Lindsey Butterfield said in a statement that the hotel in Rotherham was at the time "full of terrified residents and staff," according to CNN. The UK's minister of police has stated that far-right rioters who have caused disturbances will be dealt with "nick them quick," but he has also stated that the army is not necessary.

Just weeks after taking office, Keir Starmer's Labour government faces a formidable battle from the violent upheaval, which is the worst since the 2011 riots. In reaction to recent attacks, the UK Home Office declared on Sunday that mosques would receive "greater protection with new emergency security" in the country.

10:26   Search, rescue ops underway after cloudburst in Shimla
Relief and rescue operations are currently underway in flood-affected Samej village near Rampur in Shimla district following catastrophic cloudbursts in different areas of Himachal Pradesh.

A catastrophic cloudburst recently struck Himachal Pradesh, causing widespread devastation and destroying different areas of the hill station, including Samej village.

On Monday the Lahual Spiti Police said that due to a flash flood near Zinzing Bar on National Highway 3, the road has been blocked. Restoration is ongoing but all traffic is halted at Sarcha and Sarch till the post is cleared.

Earlier on Sunday, the Kullu-Manali Highway, which was washed away in the cloudburst on August 1, opened only one way for traffic movement.

Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul S Ravish told ANI, "The National Highway was the most damaged, but it has been restored for a single lane... Nirmand area faced the most loss. There is an update in Bagipul, that two people are missing... Our missing count has gone up to 11 and one body has been recovered. There are 12 people in total. In Bagipul and nearby areas, 20 bridges have been flown away. The Forest Department has done a temporary restoration..."

Earlier on Saturday, Himachal Pradesh minister Vikramaditya Singh said that around 50 people are feared dead in the affected areas and the official number can only be declared after official confirmation and completion of rescue operations.

09:36   Protestors launch 'Long March to Dhaka', 100 dead
Bangladesh braced for another tense day as protestors asked the general public to join a "Long March to Dhaka" on Monday, a day after nearly 100 people died in fierce clashes between demonstrators demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and the ruling party supporters in different parts of the country.

At least 99 people, including 14 policemen, were killed in clashes on Sunday, leading Bengali-language newspaper Prothom Alo reported. The violence forced authorities to cut off mobile internet and enforce a nationwide curfew for an indefinite period.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has rescheduled their "Long March to Dhaka" to be held on Monday, a day earlier than initially planned. The decision was taken during an urgent meeting amid growing concerns in the country, Asif Mahmud, a coordinator of the movement, said in a press release issued on Sunday night.

"In an urgent decision to review the situation, our 'March to Dhaka' program has been changed from August 6 to August 5. In other words, we are calling on students from all over the country to travel to Dhaka tomorrow (Monday), he said. The final battle has come. It is time to make the final signature of this student citizen uprising. Come to Dhaka to be a part of history. Students will create a new Bangladesh," Asif added, asking the general public to join it.

The Awami League's planned mourning procession on Monday has been cancelled due to a curfew. India has advised all its nationals to avoid travelling to Bangladesh until further notice due to ongoing violence.

09:09   Monday mayhem as markets bleed over Sahm Rule
In the Asian stock markets, Japanese indices registered high losses during the early trading session on Monday.

The Japanese markets are down 20 per cent from their recent all-time highs. The Nikkei 225 index declined more than 1600 points or 4.85 per cent to 34,247.56.

The markets of Japan faced pressure after the Bank of Japan announced a well-telegraphed rate hike, which led to an unwinding of Yen Carry trades, as the Yen appreciated.

Foreign investors are selling Japanese stocks due to concerns that the U.S. may be heading for a recession, Naka Matsuzawa, chief strategist at Nomura Securities was quoted as saying by Nikkei Asia.

"The fall is not really happening due to Japan-specific reasons," he said. "Markets are still trying to find the bottom.

"According to Nikkei Asia, Matsuzawa does not foresee a global recession and said markets will be volatile until the U.S. Federal Reserve lowers rates. Investors are pricing in a cut by September.

In Taiwan markets the Taiwan Weighted index also declined by more than 6 per cent, and the Singapore market also declined with the index Straits Times declining around 3 per cent.

Globally markets are reacting after on Friday, the Sahm Rule got triggered, as US unemployment reached 4.3 per cent. This is predicting a US recession.

The "Sahm Rule" is a recession indicator created and named after Claudia Sahm, a macroeconomist who worked at the Federal Reserve and the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

"Expect more selling in the markets, but as we saw on June 4th and in July post the Union Budget, the strong domestic liquidity could provide a safety net for the Indian markets, in a worsening global sentiment environment. What is hurting market sentiment is also the triggering of the "Sahm rule", which has a 100 per cent record for predicting a recession" said Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert.

08:57   Heavy security in J-K for anniversary of Art 370 abrogation
Army troops opened fire after noticing the movement of two groups of infiltrators along the Line of Control (LoC) in Akhnoor and Sunderbani sectors of Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Monday, officials said.

Though there was no exchange of fire, a massive search operation is underway in both areas to ensure that there is no infiltration from across the border, they said.

Alert Army troops fired after picking up suspicious movement of three to four infiltrators in a forward area in the Battal sector of Akhnoor on the outskirts of Jammu around 1.30 am, the officials said.

The area was illuminated with flares and put under surveillance through drones with reinforcements mobilised to lay a tight cordon.

A search operation was launched at first light, they said.

The Army troops also fired a few rounds on noticing suspicious movement in a forward area in the Sunderbani-Nowshera sector in Rajouri district around 12.30 am.

A search of the area along the LoC is also underway, they added.

Security has been beefed up across Jammu and Kashmir in view of the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which granted a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday.

India's key defender and first rusher Amit Rohidas will miss Tuesday's Olympic men's hockey semifinal against Germany after he was handed a one-match suspension following his red card against Great Britain in the quarterfinal.

This means India will have only 15 players available for the key clash, which is big set back for the eight-time Olympic champions.

"Amit Rohidas was suspended for one match for a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during the India vs Great Britain match on August 4," a FIH official statement read. "The suspension affects match No. 35 (India's semi-final match against Germany), where Amit Rohidas will not participate and India will play with a squad of 15 players only."

Rohidas was sent off the pitch against Great Britain almost 40 minutes from the final hooter after his stick unintentionally hit a rival player on Sunday.

Nine children, aged 10 to 15 years, were killed and two injured in the wall collapse incident at a religious programme in Shahpur, Sagar Divisional Commissioner Virendra Singh Rawat said.

A programme of "Parthiv Shivling Nirman" (making Shivling out of clay) was going on under a tent near the dilapidated house, and a wall collapsed and fell on the tent, local BJP MLA and former minister Gopal Bhargava told reporters.

The children got crushed under the tent and debris, he said.

Collector Arya said the children were sitting under a tent near a temple, and the house wall collapsed due to rain. Two children died on the spot, while seven others succumbed on the way to the hospital or on reaching there, he said.
