Paris to open first refugee camp mid-October

Paris will open its first refugee camp in mid-October, Mayor Anne Hidalgo said Tuesday, announcing a centre solely for men with an initial capacity of 400.

The centre, which will be housed in an old railway site in the north of Paris, aims to replace the makeshift camps that keep springing up around the city.

Making the announcement, the mayor said, "Paris will not stand by and do nothing as the Mediterranean becomes a graveyard of refugees."
