January 14, 2009
Lakhs of devotees took a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of 'Makar Sankranti' on Wednesday. Apart from Triveni Sangam in Allahabad, ritual bathing also takes place at Haridwar and Garh Mukteshwar in Uttar Pradesh, Patna in Bihar and Ganga Sagar in Bengal.

Makar Sankranti, which falls in the Hindu month of Magh, is a harvest festival. It celebrates the advent of Spring. Unlike most other Hindu festivals, Makar Sankranti is based on the solar calendar.
