D Sivanandan, Hemant Karkare's close friend and colleague, is the chief of the local Intelligence Bureau. "I am over six years senior to him and it was a pleasure knowing him. We had been more like family friends. We used to hang out together often; my wife and his wife are close friends. We shared a close, affectionate relationship," he remembered.
"Hemant was someone who was very precise on what he wanted and how he worked. I am sure he would have gone places if he was still here. I am truly saddened by his demise. He was a very fine chap and an excellent officer. It is a great loss for the department."
"Officers who are methodical and dedicated are in short supply. He was a much sought-after guy. He was very professional. He also had an edge over the others because of his foreign posting. I miss him."
Three months from the day of the violent attack, Hemant Karkare's loss remains irreplaceable -- not only for his family and friends, but also for the city and the nation.
