Lok Sabha Sepaker Somnath Chatterjee has said those who are occupying constitutional positions must give primacy to discharging their constitutional obligations in remarks seen as an oblique backing to Kerala Chief Minister V S Achutanandan's stand in his standoff with the party rival Pinarayi Vijayan.

There would not be any conflict if those occupying such positions adjust themselves to their responsibilites to the
Constitution and the party, he said in an interview to Asianet channel.

Chatterjee's comments assume significance in the context of his own battle with the Communist Party of India-Marxist when he had refused to toe its line and decided not not to quit the Lok Sabha Speaker's post after it withdrew support to the United Progressive Alliance governmnet on the nuclear deal issue.

The  Kerala chief minister has been maintaining that  he would not not speak against the Central Bureau of Investigation which is seeking the prosecution of Pinarayi in the Lavalin scam.

Achutanandan had said he had difficulty in doing because he had a constitutional responsibility to discharge even as
the party's Politbureau had termed the case against Pinarayi as a political conspiracy.
