The prestigious Mumbai South constituency, home to some of India's richest people, will witness a multi- cornered fight in the April 30 Lok Sabha polls. The contestants in the fray include a young MP, a doctor, a banker, a controversial politician and an ex-gangster among others.
Sitting Member of Parliament Milind Deora of Congress, who became the youngest member to enter Lok Sabha at the age of 27, is locked in a contest with Shiv Sena veteran Mohan Rawale, ABN-Amro Bank Country Head Meera Sanyal, gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli and Professionals Party of India's Dr Mona Shah.
Real estate prices in the high profile constituency are among the highest in the world and the area has often been on the terror radar.
Two of its most prestigious landmarks, the Bombay Stock Exchange and the Air India building, were rocked by bomb blasts in March 1993. In August 2003, a powerful bomb exploded in a taxi near Gateway of India. Terror revisited the upscale locality on November 26, 2008, when luxury hotels Taj and Oberoi reverberated with gun shots and grenade blasts.
