It was a trip worth making for the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, as he visited the pedestal of pride of India's freedom struggle--the Jaitu police station in Punjab--where his great-grandfather was imprisoned during the freedom struggle.
Gandhi toured the police station, formerly a jail, where Jawaharlal Nehru was kept after he was arrested along with the Akalis by the British during the country's freedom struggle movement in 1923.
Apart from the room in which his grandfather was kept, the Amethi MP had a glance at the copies of FIR--written in Urdu and Punjabi--filed against Nehru.
He also heard about the contributions made by the people of the region during the freedom struggle and assured them that an educational institution for girls would be set up at Jaitu in the memory of the freedom fighters.
Gandhi later paid obeisance at the Gurudwara Tibbi Sahib in the district. Earlier, addressing a gathering at Ramiana village en-route to Faridkot, Rahul said he was overwhelmed by the hospitality of people of Punjab and assured them that he would do his best to resolve their problems.
"I am enjoying the warm hospitality of the people of Punjab," he said. Rahul was accompanied by All India Congress Committee general secretary Margaret Alva, Youth Congress chief Ashok Tanwar, Punjab Congress chief Mohinder Singh Kaypee and Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.
Rahul is on a three-day tour of Punjab as part of his 'Discover India' programme.
