'So don't screw it up this time'
October 07, 2008
"However I do think that this is one of those vital crucial moments in history that throws up a man for the job," he said. "Cometh the hour, cometh the man. And I think it is actually a misfortune of Hillary Clinton that the extraordinary qualified leader that she is, should have come up against somebody with this extra dimension. Somebody with an extra gear and capacity to inspire us and the capacity perhaps to lead America away from this pile of shit."
Rushdie was just getting charged up. Now his attack was not just on the Bush presidency, but on also on the voters in America. "For the last eight years Americans – and that means you -- I don't mean you personally -- have been voting for stupidity, deviousness, and incompetence," he said. “By which I mean Bush, Rove and Rumsfeld."
Later he ended his speech with a sense of hope. "There is some evidence that people are interested in intelligence, clarity and a broad vision of the world and what we might almost say goodness," he said, referring to the potential Obama victory. "So don't screw it up this time. I don't think you will. I think we will be alright."
