Sneak peek: Gujjar territory

May 29, 2008
It is said even Colonel Kirrori Singh Bainsla, the leader of the Gujjars is not too keen on continuing the stand-off, with the Army cutting off supplies and having formed a ring over the protestors in Bayana.

Here's what Ground Zero looks like.

Sikandra, one of the two places where the police opened fire on May 24, is about 80 km from Jaipur. Approaching the district headquarters Dausa, the highway forks into two. The narrower of the two leads into Dausa town as the highway continues to Sikandra.

At the fork, scores of trucks and tractors have been parked along the highway, with the drivers finding it hard to kill time.

Two small dhabas oat the fork have been doing brisk business for five days now. "Where do you want to go? If you take the road from inside town you can reach Sikandra, which is some 25 kilometres from here. If you take the highway, the police will stop you within two kilometers from here.

"Stay here till the roads are cleared. Uncle here makes good food. We have been doing nothing but eat and read the papers for five days and now," Ram Singh, a tractor driver ventures.
