The condition of veteran Marxist leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet, who came out of coma, was "slightly better", a senior doctor attending on him said on Thursday while maintaining that he continues to be "critical".

"His overall condition has improved. If at all he is slightly better and out of coma now," Dr Purushottam Lal, cardiac surgeon, Metro Hospital, told PTI.

He has been taken off the ventilator and there has been some improvement in his overall condition.

The 92-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital on May 6 and had slipped into coma 10 days later.

A CAT scan showed that his brain was functioning, the doctor said, adding that his blood parameters are also normal.

Surjeet "is responding to painful stimuli and breathing on his own, but considering his age, he is still critical," Lal said.

The veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist leader was admitted to the hospital following a cardiac-respiratory arrest.
