Eleven people, including a Railways locomotive driver, were killed and at least two others were injured when suspected Dimaa Halam Daogah (Jewel) militants carried out two separate attacks in North Cachar Hill district on Thursday morning.

According to a police source, ten people were killed when the militants – also known as Black Widows- waylaid five trucks at Panimur area, which falls under the Umrangshu police station, at around 8.30 am today morning.

The ultras opened fire on the drivers and helpers and set the trucks on fire. Three of the trucks were completely burnt while the other two were partially damaged.

In another incident, a Railway engine driver was killed and two other Railway staffers injured when militants opened fire at a Northeast Frontier Railway's  patrol-special train.

The train was attacked by the militants at around 6.35 am, between Mopa and Kalachand railway stations, in the North Cachar Hill district.

Engine driver N N Bora was killed on the spot while assistant locomotive drive P K Deb and Gangman Ramesh Thakuria were injured in the attack. There were other railway staffers on the patrol train, which was checking the tracks for subsequent train service.

A railway source informed that senior NFR officials from the divisional headquarter at Lumding rushed to the spot following the incident. Meanwhile, the NFR has cancelled all train services in the Lumding-Badarpur section from today, in the wake of the attack.

Earlier, the Railway had suspended only night running of trains in that section, in view of the deteriorating law and order situation in the hill district, since last Saturday.
