Kashmir Singh reunited with his family after 35 years

March 05, 2008
Struggling to control her emotions, Paramjit Kaur said it was the happiest moment of her life.

"I am very happy today. I have been through bad times in bringing up my three children single-handedly. But I am looking forward to a new dawn. Now that he is back in India, my worries are over," Singh's wife said.

Some well-wishers also garlanded Singh and showered him with rose petals as he met his family briefly before being taken away by Border Security Force and intelligence agencies for a 'debriefing'.

Singh said he was never tortured in Pakistani jails.

"A new life has begun for me and I am grateful to the people of Pakistan and to the Pakistani government," said Singh, who carried a plastic bag with his meagre belongings. Singh said he would want to go back to Pakistan, this time on a valid Indian passport, to lay a 'chadar' at the shrine of Baba Farid.
