JMM to decide soon on UPA support

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which has five members in the Lok Sabha, will soon take a stand on supporting the United Progressive Alliance during the confidence vote, party president Shibu Soren said on Friday.

"Our parliamentary board will meet within a week to decide on the matter," Soren said, when asked whether the party, which is part of the UPA, would support it in case of a trust vote.

"Its their own decision," Soren, who is the chairman of the Jharkhand UPA steering committee, said when asked to comment on the Left's decision to withdraw support from the four-year-old government.

Soren first became a Union Cabinet Minister in May 2004 but had to resign two months later after a court issued a non-bailable warrant against him in the 20-year-old murder case.

Soren was re-inducted into the Union Cabinet as coal minister in November the same year but again had to resign two years later after a Delhi court convicted him in the 1994 case of murder of his private secretary.

However, after the Delhi High Court acquitted him in the case in August 2007, Soren was not third-time lucky as he did not find a berth in the government when the Union council of ministers was last expanded.

The JMM's differences with the Congress are not new as the party had earlier differed with Congress over its plans to withdraw outside support to the Madhu Koda-led government in Jharkhand on the grounds that he was not delivering results.
