Two minor girls from Canada, holidaying in Kumarakom, were allegedly molested by a security man of a hotel, raising concerns over the safety of foreign tourists visiting Kerala.

The police said the sisters, aged 12 and 13, came to Kumarakom and stayed at the hotel two days ago. Shyju Varghese, the security guard of the hotel, allegedly attempted to molest the girls in the hotel's billiards room on Wednesday, following which they raised an alarm.

Varghese has been arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Peter John, father of the girls, the police said.

Following the incident, the family cut short their stay and left the place. The accused was produced before the judicial first class Magistrate and later granted bail.

This is the second incident of molestation involving foreign tourists in the state since the beginning of the year. On New Year's Eve in Kochi, some tourists were allegedly molested at the Fort Kochi beach, prompting the police to take a suo motu (on its own motion) case.
