Ten Indians, most of them believed to be from Andhra Pradesh, were among the 11 people killed after a massive fire destroyed an old building in Deira locality in Dubai.

Rescue teams worked through the night searching for bodies through the debris, after the ceiling of the single-storey building collapsed due to fire on Tuesday.

"Consular officials are at the site and coordinating with authorities to ascertain the number and identity of those dead and will announce as soon as they get the details," sources in the Dubai consulate told PTI.

The police has also launched a probe into the cause of the fire. Brigadier Mehdi Abdul Al Jalil of the Dubai police told the local media on Tuesday that most people died when the ceiling of the single-storey building collapsed due to fire.

"The fire was not that big and it was put out in a couple of hours but the building was very old and the ceiling collapsed while they were sleeping," Al Jalil said.

Venu Rajamony, India's Consul-General in Dubai, also assured all possible help for the victims. "We will of course help the victims and their family members in any way we can," he was quoted as saying.
