Movement of trains on the Mumbai-Delhi and Mumbai-Ahmedabad routes here was suspended on Wednesday morning due to overflowing of Vishwamitri river, official sources said.

The river, which passes through Vadodara, was flowing over a railway bridge between Varnama and Makarpura areas on the city's outskirts since last night due to heavy rain. The water level, which stood at 28.6 feet, is 2.6 feet above the danger level, they said.

Several trains, on their way to Ahmedabad and Delhi from Mumbai, had been stopped at different stations.

Around 1,200 people from the low-lying areas of the city have been shifted to safer places, the sources told PTI by phone.

Heavy downpour has claimed three lives in Vadodara district in the past 24 hours, taking the season's death toll to seven.
