The Communist Party of India-Marxist on Monday took 'extremely strong objection' to the remark of the Prime Minister's Office that parties should eschew temptation of politicising the misery of the people and said the statement on price rise was 'very insulting'.
"We take an extremely strong objection. As a political party, I think it is our responsibility to raise the issue of the plight of the people, and if we raise the issue, it cannot be described in such a callous manner," CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said in the Rajya Sabha.
"We want the Prime Minister's Office and the government to eschew all temptations of being irresponsible towards the plight of the people, and the plight of the people today requires immediate and prompt intervention to curtail price rise," he said.
Yechury said rather than giving the response of the government to the points raised by the Left parties, which support the UPA from outside, "This sort of a charge that the political parties are exploiting the misery of the people does not augur well for the government".
"The government ought to have been in the lead to take up the issue of price rise," he said, adding that if it did not act on suggestions given by the Left, it should accept the fact that government has failed to control the price rise.
After meeting Left leaders on the price rise issue on Friday, the Prime Minister had urged all political parties to refrain from politicising the misery of the people and warned against creating an environment of scarcity which would encourage speculators and hoarders.
