A Delhi traffic police constable, who was arrested for allegedly raping a teenaged girl in a moving car, was on Friday sacked from service.
Constable Sanjeev Kumar and a property dealer Naresh Kumar allegedly raped a 11-year-old girl in a moving car on Thursday after picking her up from Shahbad Dairy locality in outer Delhi.
"The constable has been dismissed from service after he was arrested in connection with the rape case," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.
Police said Sanjeev has confessed to his crime. A case of kidnapping and rape has been registered against them.
Sanjeev and Naresh, who were arrested on Thursday itself after the incident came to light, were produced before Metropolitan Magistrate D K Jangala, who sent them to judicial custody till May nine.
During the production of the accused, Magistrate asked police why it did not invoke section 34 of Indian Penal Code (common intention to commit crime) against the duo. The investigating officer informed the court that police would add the charge.
Thursday's rape was the second such incident of a minor girl being sexually assaulted in a moving car this month. A 12-year-old girl was raped allegedly by three persons known to her on April three in Jhwala locality.
According to Delhi Police statistics, 581 rape cases were registered last year.
Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Committee on Women's Empowerment on Friday summoned the Delhi Police Commissioner to discuss the safety and security of women in the city.
The committee, headed by Congress MP Krishna Tirath, also sought a detailed report from Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal on the cases of crime against women in Delhi in the recent past and the action taken by the police.
"It is indeed a matter of concern that there are cases of crime against women in the national capital on a daily basis. We summoned the Police Commissioner to ask him whether the police have put in place any mechanism to deal with the situation," Tirath told PTI.
"The committee has asked the Police Commissioner to come back within a week with a detailed report on the number of cases of crime against women in Delhi in the recent months and what action the police has taken in these cases," she said.
