Of Space, Kalam & ignited minds

September 27, 2007
Touching upon the need for comprehensive space security, he said, "We must avoid terrestrial geo-political conflicts to be drawn into outer space, thus threatening the assets belonging to humanity."

"Any unilateral action, which upsets the stability of space, is against the interest of the entire humanity," he added.

The former President also had an interactive session with school students.

When a schoolgirl asked Dr Kalam why he did not accept President's post again despite demands from several quarters, he said: "You know you are simply a fantastic girl. Before becoming President, I was involved in teaching. I worked in the political system for five years. The job is over. Now I have come back to teaching and research."

When asked whether the country was on the path to achieve the goals of his Vision-2020, Dr Kalam said: "India can uplift substantial number of families currently below the poverty line if 10 per cent growth rate is maintained for 20 years. We will have to increase GDP by 10 per cent and maintain that for 20 years. If we do that, then the 22 per cent BPL families can be uplifted."
