The Indian community of Flushing, in northern Queens, a suburb of New York City, organises, every year, a special chariot procession to honour Lord Ganesh.
This year, the Ganesh rath yatra -- Ganpati is pulled in a silver chariot by horses sumptuously decorated in silver too -- wound its way through the streets of this strongly Indian suburb, past sweet shops and Indian beauty salons.
Hundreds of devotees joined the parade dancing, singing and banging cymbols. Thousands of spectators gathered to watch.
Organised by the old and venerable Ganesh Temple of Flushing, officially called the Sri Maha Vallabha Ganapathi Devasthanam, which is now 30 years old, kilos and kilos of sweets are distributed and the whole neighbourhood dons a magically festive mood.
