A man, accused of raping and murdering a three-year-old girl in Lucknow, was lynched by a mob in presence of police on Tuesday.
After the body of the three-year-old girl was recovered from neighbour Shiv Mohan's house in Pandeyganj locality, a mob of about 300 people thrashed the accused, who later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital, Circle Officer Chiranjeev Sinha told PTI.
Sinha said the girl's parents informed their daughter had gone missing at around 8am and apprehended Mohan's involvement in it.
On interrogation, Mohan, who is an accused in another rape incident, confessed to have killed the girl, Sinha said, adding that the body was recovered from his house.
The recovery of the body sent shock waves among the people who had gathered in large numbers and vented their ire on Mohan, he said.
Pandeyganj Police outpost in-charge C D Saroj also suffered injuries while trying to save the accused from the mob's wrath.
Sinha said rape has not been confirmed in the post-mortem examination.
