All the four Indians kidnapped in Nigeria are safe and efforts are underway to get them released, the Centre said in New Delhi on Monday.

The four employees of an Italian company were abducted on Saturday by a group of armed gunmen who attacked an offshore oil facility in southern Nigeria.

"According to the latest information, all of them are safe," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told journalists when asked about the fate of the abducted Indians.

He said the Indian High Commission in Nigeria was in contact with the management of the company ENI and Nigerian authorities to ensure the release of the abducted people.

However, he said that the Indian government was not involved in the negotiations for the release of the hostages and it was being handled by the company.

Sarna added that the High Commission has asked all Indians to be extra vigilant, particularly in Niger areas, in view of the abduction.

Two other foreigners were also kidnapped along with the Indians during the attack on the oil rig -- FPSO Mystras -- operated by the Italian company. A report from Abuja said that a separatist group -- Movement for Emancipation of the Niger Delta -- has claimed responsibility for the abduction.
