Rival factions of Hurriyat Conference on Wednesday came together in criticising the United Nations saying the world body had virtually failed to implement its decisions to resolve contentious issues like Kashmir.
"United Nations came into being to restore peace in the world. While peace remains a distant dream, it even failed to implement its own decisions to resolve contentious issues like Kashmir," moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said in a statement in Srinagar on the 62nd anniversary of the world body.
Accusing the UN of working under the influence of America the Hurriyat faction alleged that in the name of fighting terrorism, terror acts were taking place in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Kashmir.
Today when the world is observing the anniversary of the United Nations, Hurriyat wants to clarify to its General Secretary that resolution of the Kashmir issue held the key to peace in the South Asian region.
The resolution of the Kashmir issue has become more essential with both India and Pakistan becoming nuclear powers, it said and asked the UN to put pressure on both the countries to achieve it in a manner which is acceptable, honourable and everlasting.
The hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani said the UN had lost its significance and was being controlled by the United States and other powers.
"The UN has become a tool in the hands of oppressors," a statement from them said, adding it was time to think whether the world body had served its purpose or not.
