Chief of Army Staff General Deepak Kapoor on Friday said an upsurge in terrorist violence was a matter of concern and wanted nations and governments to come together to fight the menace.
"Terrorist violence anywhere is a cause of concern," he said when asked about his comments on Thursday night's terror strike in Karachi that claimed 165 lives and left over 500 injured.
To combat terrorism, he said, nations and governments should come together to launch a "joint action" against these forces globally.
In significant comments ahead of Indo-Pak talks on terrorism, the new army chief said there were ups and downs in terrorist violence levels in the country.
"Whenever there is a lull, some incidents take place to vitiate the atmosphere," he said.
Turning to Jammu and Kashmir, Kapoor, who was speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of a flag-in function to honour men of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, ruled out any thinning of forces saying that terrorist violence in the state has not come down.
"If the violence level is going up, army's role is to bring it down," Kapoor, who took over as army chief earlier this month, said making it clear "it is not the time for troop reduction in Jammu and Kashmir."
"We want peace in Jammu and Kashmir and ensured nobody targets innocents. We want tranquility in the state so that development process can go on unhindered," he said.
