The Patna High Court on Tuesday granted bail to former member of Parliament and Janata Dal – United leader Lovely Anand, who was recently sentenced to life for the murder of Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah in 1994.

Official sources in the court told rediff.com that the court granted bail to Lovely after hearing the petition filed by her.

On October 3, Additional District and Sessions Judge Ramshreshtra Rai had sentenced Lovely Anand , a former MP from Vaishali, to life along with three other accused for inciting a mob to lynch Krishnaiah.

The court also sentenced Lovely's husband Anand Mohan Singh, a former MP and JD-U leader and two other accused - former MLA and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Akhlaq Ahmed and JD-U leader Arun Kumar -- to death for Krishnaiah's murder.

In her appeal, Lovely had urged the high court to set aside the order passed against her by the trial court in Patna on October 3 and pleaded for bail.

District magistrate Krishnaiah was killed near Khabra, on the outskirts of Muzaffarpur, by a mob accompanying the funeral procession of Chotan Shukla, an underworld don with political ambitions.  Shukla and three others were gunned down when they were returning from an election campaign for the 1995 assembly polls.
