Seven people, including five women, were killed in New Delhi's Badarpur area on Sunday morning when an over-speeding Blueline bus rammed into pedestrians crossing a road. The incident triggered protests among angry onlookers, who set the bus on fire.
The accident took place near Ali village railway bridge in southern Delhi when the driver of the bus lost control over the vehicle and rammed into people crossing the road. Nine persons were injured in the accident, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Anil Shukla.
The injured were rushed to AIIMS and Apollo hospitals, and they are now in a stable condition.
Soon after the incident, a large number of locals gathered at the spot, blocked the traffic, attacked the driver and tried to torch the bus. The police lobbed several rounds of tear gas shells and resorted to lathi charge.
A senior Delhi government official said that they were investigating the cause of the accident. The driver of the bus, who suffered injuries after being attacked by the angry locals, has been arrested, police said.
Senior police officials have rushed to the spot and a large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incidents.
The Delhi government had recently ordered a crackdown on the notorious Blueline buses which frequently cause fatal accidents due to rash driving. On Saturday, two people were killed and one person was critically injured in another accident involving a Blueline bus.
