As many as 949 civilians and 346 security personnel were killed in terrorism-related violence during 2007 in Jammu and Kashmir, north-eastern states and states hit by naxal activities, Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal said in the Rajya Sabha.
"During 2007, 139 civilians and 95 security personnel were killed in Jammu and Kashmir, 427 civilians and 63 security personnel in north-eastern states and 383 civilians and 188 security personnel in naxal-hit states," said Jaiswal.
He said 359 persons were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir, 1,506 in north-eastern states and 1,105 in naxal-affected states in 2007.
In 2006, 1,219 civilians (389 in J&K, 309 in the north-east and 521 in naxal-hit states), and 384 security personnel (151 in J&K, 76 in the north-east and 157 in naxal-affected states) were killed, he added.
Jaiswal added that in 2006, the number of people arrested is 429 in J&K, 1,406 in north-eastern states and 1,270 in naxal-hit states.
During 2007, 411 terrorists, down from 593 in 2006, were killed in J&K. The figure for the north-east was 435, up from 395 in 2006, while in naxal-hit states the figure dropped 272 in 2006 to 127.
"As per available information, as on January 1, 2006, the civil police-people ratio in India is 1:699 as compared to 1:290 in the United Kingdom, 1:334 in the United States, 1:416 in New Zealand, 1:563 in Japan and 1:625 in Pakistan," Jaiswal said.
