The British lie quietly in Meerut

May 9, 2007
Another grave reads: 'William Boyle Chavasse who died on November 2, 1857 from heart disease, greatly accelerated from excessive fatigue during the whole of the siege in Delhi.'

Asked if descendants of the British ever visit the graves, Robinson says, "A few do. I don't know where they come from though." He then brings out a book detailing every visitor's name. Some come from England; others from Australia and New Zealand.

"Who has the time to come here today?" asks Robinson. "We get about 3-4 visitors from abroad a year. These graves are forgotten by everyone else."
