The British lie quietly in Meerut
May 9, 2007
The European Line was one that divided the living areas of the Indians and British in Meerut. On May 10, 1857, when the mutiny broke, the British who were stuck or had homes in Indian areas were attacked by the freedom fighters.
The British ran for their lives and came in their own areas, where about 2,000 of them were staying. Neither group dared cross the line.
