Opposition National Democratic Alliance on Thursday toned down its week-long aggressive tactics on the Quattrocchi issue as it welcomed the move to allow its leaders to raise their objections in Parliament over the detention of the Bofors case accused in Argentina.

"It's good that the deadlock (between the opposition and the government) on it has ended," senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj told reporters in Delhi.

She said Leader of the Lok Sabha Pranab Mukherjee, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi and his deputy Suresh Pachouri met opposition leader Lal Kishenchand Advani in his chamber and told him that a full-fledged discussion on the Quattrocchi espisode would be allowed in the House next week.

They also informed him about the decision regarding the prime minister's statement in Parliament.

Earlier in the day, the NDA, whose leaders met in Advani's chamber in Parliament, hardened its stand on the Quattrocchi row as it vowed that it would not let the House function if the prime minister did not give a statement on the issue.

The opposition wanted that its leaders in both Houses too be allowed an opportunity to raise their objections.

It accused Dr Singh of contempt of Parliament for his remarks to the media on the detention of the Italian businessman while Parliament was in session.

Quattrocchi's detention and bail have taken precedence over the issue of surging prices, which the BJP has not raised so far in the House despite its pre-session plans.
