What a wonderful world!

July 4, 2007
The Sydney Opera House, Sydney

Sydney's famous white-winged Opera House, completed in 1973, has just been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the youngest candidate canvassing support for a place on the Seven Wonders of the World list.

The Sydney Opera House, which was designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzon, took 15 years to complete.

Some facts you probably did not know:

  • Utzon's design was one of 233 entries received from 32 countries. He also designed the National Assembly building in Kuwait and is still consulted on any changes made to the opera house.

  • A tram depot was demolished to make way for the opera house, which was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II of Britain.
