He's certainly got the look, and in true M&B style the striking-looking Herr Sauer is a social disaster. He's known to believe the couple follows separate careers – he is a highly-respected chemistry professor – and had even skipped the World Cup, leaving the Chancellor to cheer the German side all by herself.

He was not by her side even on her election day, preferring to catch the events on the telly.

He was not there at the St Petersburg summit last year, but this year he has taken everyone by surprise by not only attending the summit but also being part of the spouses' programme.

And yes, it was him in the photograph with Laureen Harper at the St Nikolai Church.

A combination of brains, brawn and interesting looks – does he get the ladies' vote?
