"Elements in the Pakistan Army" are backing the infiltration of militants into India across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, Army Chief General J J Singh said on Wednesday.

"There is always some support available to militants to infiltrate across the border," Singh told reporters at a defence ministry function in Delhi.

"We have reports to suggest some elements of the Pakistan Army, including the Inter-Services Intelligence, are helping to push the militants across," he said.

Earlier, Defence Minister A K Antony said the army has been asked to "closely monitor" the situation all along the 742-km LoC to check the "pattern and strength" of infiltration bids.

Noting that April had witnessed an unusual upswing in infilration attempts, Antony said the army has been asked to closely monitor the situation for the next three months to discern whether there was a pattern in the bids by militants to sneak across the LoC.

"There was a hike in infiltration attempts in April, (and) we will monitor the figures for the months of May, June and July," he said.
