Disaster on Flight JJ3054
July 18, 2007
In pouring rain, Brazil's TAM Airlines with 176 passengers on board crashed while attempting to land at Sao Paulo's Congonhas Airport on Tuesday night.
At least 200 people are estimated to have died, including a few on the ground. The Airbus 320 skidded off a wet runway and crashed into a building, bursting into flames in Brazil's worst air disaster.
The airplane disappeared inside the building with only its tail end remaining visible from the outside, witnesses said. It slammed into a gas station outside the airport perimeter. The airport was immediately closed to air traffic and flights diverted to other airports serving the Sao Paulo area, local media reported.
